Wheelersburg OH plumber installing sinkChoosing to enter into a new occupation and enroll in a trade school near Wheelersburg OH are serious decisions that will profoundly impact your future career. However with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you approach identifying the best one? Not only do you have to make sure that you will obtain the comprehensive training required to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some potential students make the mistake of enrolling in a vocational school simply because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Others may be attracted to the school that charges the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are significant considerations when evaluating trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Other factors such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will review several of those questions shortly in this article. But first, let’s talk about some of the trade options that are available including the accessibility of online schools.

Perhaps you have already decided on one that you have long wished to pursue. For example, maybe you have always enjoyed working on your car and have considered utilizing that talent to make a living as a car mechanic. Or perhaps a family member has had a long and successful career in a particular vocation or trade and you would like to follow in his or her footsteps. Regardless of what your motivation is for entering a trade, there is undoubtedly a program offered that will give you the training that you need. Below is just a small representation of the vocational training programs that are available in the Wheelersburg OH area.

  • Auto Mechanic
  • Heating and Cooling (HVAC) Tech
  • Plumber
  • Electrician
  • Welding
  • Truck Driver
  • Aircraft Maintenance Tech
  • Lab Technician
  • Construction Management

Each of the programs will have varying costs and completion times based upon the vocation, credential earned and school. Many of the programs may be completed in a few weeks, while others will require months or even two or more years of training. Each of these aspects need to be considered prior to choosing a vocation and school.

Online Vocational Schools

man attending trade school online in Wheelersburg OHSchools available online have become very popular with Wheelersburg OH students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

After you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Wheelersburg OH area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Wheelersburg OH area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Wheelersburg OH is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Wheelersburg OH area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Wheelersburg OH area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Wheelersburg OH contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Ohio and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Wheelersburg OH, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
